Why a Seattle School Board Director Training?

The issues surrounding school board governance are complex. Running for a school board director position is a unique challenge, especially in Seattle, where there is no training program to support potential candidates in preparing for the role or the electoral campaign. Historically, school board directors often come from economically privileged backgrounds or are retirees.

Representation is crucial, and particularly in the current political climate, it is essential to build and support school board candidates who understand the issues while incorporating a comprehensive racial and social equity perspective. Electing diverse leadership on school boards will ensure that all students are better served in their academic journeys and overall life success.

This training series will cover topics such as:

  • How to run a campaign
  • What's your why in running
  • Budget - including funding sources
  • District 101 - learn the Seattle School District Landscape
  • The role of the school board, the role of the school board director, and the time commitment
  • Student Outcome Focus Governance - the Seattle School Board's governance model - the pros and cons
  • Hear from different educational organizations in Seattle
  • And MORE!
